Board of Directors blog posts focus on how to become a more effective board member, how to establish governance priorities and best practices. Good governance means a board that is curious, engaged in the bigger goals of the organization, and able to navigate a market or the world in which the business wants to make an impact. It also means that the board is able to speak out when issues arise and is able to coach. It’s a system that is able to balance power in a precise way. However it isn’t always working well.

Many of the people on boards are bored and unengaged. This could be due to a lack of interest, the culture within their organization or their own personalities. Some board members aren’t sure what their role is. Others are aware that they’ren’t performing at the top of their game.

This article focuses on the second group of people, the ones who have been offered (or are currently pursuing) seats on governance boards, but who have a hard time being productive and engaged. This isn’t a riff on Johns and Daves this is an accurate reflection of the pathway to board positions (and other C-level roles). The post offers some fundamentals to help change the game.
